Remember Christmas is the busiest time of year for all retailers. Many high street businesses do 80% of their business in November and December and there's every reason to believe eBay is much the same.

Suppliers generally work a season ahead and are getting their Christmas stock ready even as we speak. So while it might seem crazy thinking about Santa and snow now, you can't really leave it much later.

How to earn extra money for Christmas by selling on eBay -What sort of Christmas lines could you sell?

Broadly speaking, there are four main categories:

#1 - Christmas Stationery

Cards, tags, bows, wrap, bags, etc. This is a Christmas line that almost anyone can have a go at. But, one tip - the eBay market tends to be a bit polarised. At one end there are exclusive hand made products, at the other end 'bumper bargain' packs. Don't forget diaries and calendars - especially the themed ones, e.g. animals, celebs. or TV related.

#2 - Christmas Decorations

Artificial trees, baubles, tinsel, garlands, novelties, lights, outdoor decorations. All fairly obvious you might think. But bear in mind fashions change: one year decorations might be all red and green, the next black! One year glitzy, the next simple and natural. So do a bit of trendwatching.

Also think about party novelties such as hats, blowers, tableware and even fancy dress. (Unfortunately, you can't sell party poppers and I think crackers are questionable, too.)

Of course stationery and gifts are pretty small lines compared to the two big ones...

#3 - Christmas Gifts

For years now eBay has proved itself a great place to do Christmas gift shopping. It's a chance to find unusual gifts that aren't easily available in the shops, at good prices, and all without leaving home and facing the crowds.

Tip: When it comes to gifts think what popular 'willing to give' prices would be and work back from that. Most people are on a budget and, in a recession, gifts that slide nicely under £10 or under £20 should do especially well.

Over the last couple of years I've been doing some trending research to find what gift types are perennially most popular. Chances are they'll be broadly the same this year:

1. Electronics. Especially gaming, phones and MP3 players. (Digital cameras have been a top trending product for almost ten years now.)
2. Electronics accessories. Such as cables, cases, media and batteries.
3. Clothing and footwear. Ugg boots have dominated the trending for the last few years. What will be hot this year? Check the fashion magazines.
4. Cosmetics. Well known brands at good prices. Also personal care products - GHD hair straighteners have been hot for the last few years.
5. Jewellery and watches.
6. Entertainment media. CD, DVD and console games. (Slowly sliding down the list as a result of downloading though.)
7. Sports and hobby equipment.

Tip: Don't just go for the obvious gift products (like socks!) Buyers use eBay because they are looking for unusual items. So do a bit of research. Read newspapers, magazines and websites to find out what sort of gifts are going to be good sellers this year.

#4 - Toys

This is the second of the two Christmas 'boom' areas and again trends are all important. You need to do a bit of digging to find out what's going to be hot this year.

Maybe it's a teeny bit mean, but you could do very well by anticipating which toys will be in short supply and bagging yourself some stock now.
